Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has reportedly declined an offer from Google regarding a potential collaboration for its virtual and mixed-reality Quest headsets. According to sources, Google proposed that Meta utilize its new Android XR platform for VR and AR devices. However, Meta opted to reject the offer, choosing to stick with an open-source version of Google’s Android operating system for its Quest devices.
This decision aligns with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s vision of positioning his company as a leader in the next generation of computing platforms. A partnership with Google could have meant relinquishing control over Meta’s platform, a risk the company seems unwilling to take as the VR market continues to evolve rapidly.
Mark Zuckerberg himself has been vocal about Meta’s latest VR headset, the Quest 3, making bold comparisons with Apple’s recently launched Vision Pro. In a video shared on Instagram, Zuckerberg praised the Quest 3’s affordability, superior comfort, wider field of view, and expansive gaming library in contrast to the Vision Pro. These accolades underline Meta’s commitment to providing a top-notch VR experience independently, rather than through collaboration with Google.
